Basket Case

When I think of decorating with baskets, I am reminded of that terrible 70's trend of hoarding dusty baskets in the small space between your upper kitchen cabinets and ceiling. These were usually paired with a fake plant or a Grecian style wine jug. Oh, it was awful.  Remember?

But it doesn't have to be like that. Baskets are great for all sorts of practical storage uses in the house. I use them tucked at the feet of chairs to hold books and magazines and also for linen closet storage. Here are some images from my dream file that make the case for baskets in the home - I especially love the huge basket used at the end of the bed.

Black Cottage, White Trim

They do it all the time in Scandinavia and Vermont!  I love the look of a chalky black house trimmed in white.  And the best part? It matches any color door you fancy. If I had a cottage with this color scheme, I'd go with a mustard yellow door.

Golden Hours...

It's that time of year again. My mother's home is calling to me. This July, as I do almost every July, I'll be taking my family to Eastern Oregon for a much needed visit to my mother's house, which we lovingly call "the farm". Since I'm in a day dreaming mood, I thought I'd share these images from my Pinterest board entitled "The Cottage".

This Week in the Studio - Utah Series

The three pieces below are part of a Utah series I'm doing for a one night showcase in Las Vegas. Selah Art Salon is hosting my work on June 7th as part of First Friday Las Vegas!  The gallery will be open serving wine and goodies from 6-9pm. I'm really excited about this collection especially since I'm using a new medium - oil pastels. (Thanks again for the inspiration, Jenny!)

Cedar Breaks  -  11"x14" oil pastel and gouache on paper

Arch  -  11"x14" oil pastel and gouache on paper

Mandeep's View  -  12" x 24" oil pastel and gouache on stretched canvas

And if you're interested, I'm teaching an art workshop at Selah the following day: Saturday, June 8th. Click HERE to read all the details and register! There are still a few spots open and I would love for you to join us.

Eclectic and Bright

By the look of this first photo, I'm still on a floral chintz kick.  But today, I'm looking at bright boho-ish spaces that feature great natural light and cream colored walls. These rooms prove that you don't have to go dark on the walls for a cozy, intimate, eclectic look. Tis the season to keep things light and bright!
